Dr. Shawn Allen's History as a Sinus Expert

Dr Allen Texas Sinus & Snoring

Dr. Allen completed his medical school and residency training in Otolaryngology at the University of Tennessee in 2014.

In 2015 he completed fellowship training in Rhinology (sinus and skull base surgery) at the University of Miami (UM). UM is a premier training institution for complex endoscopic surgery. He was then mentored by Dr. Roy Casiano. Dr. Casiano is one of the first Rhinologists to attempt large skull base tumor resections, using sinus instrumentation and avoiding large external incisions.

Dr. Allen furthered his education and worked with well-known Neurosurgeons at UM. Here he refined his team based approach to complex skull base and pituitary surgery. He is comfortable with managing complex sinus and nasal disease, a trait not shared by other Otolaryngologists.

After completing his training Dr. Allen began practicing in Houston. He specialized in the care of sinusitis, nasal breathing disorders, allergic rhinitis, obstructive sleep apnea, and other aspects of General Otolaryngology. He is both a Fellowship-certified sinus expert and a diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Allen is an active member of the American Rhinologic Society (ARS) and American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS). He has authored multiple scientific publications and book chapters. He continues to lecture for academic departments and at international Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery courses.

A Message from Dr. Allen

"Complex head and neck anatomy and interesting pathologies attracted me to Otolaryngology. Diseases of the ear, nose, and throat impact how patients interact with the world around them. As an Otolaryngologist I can help individuals with hearing loss, balance disorders, sleep dysfunction, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and many other conditions that impair an individual’s quality of life.  As my training progressed, I particularly enjoyed endoscopic sinus and skull base surgery as a subspecialty. It offers interesting anatomy, teamwork (with Neurosurgery), and the potential to improve a patient’s quality of life with less invasive surgical procedures. This has only gotten easier with the expansion of office procedures over the past decade.

During my years in practice, I’ve come to appreciate the integral link between feeling healthy and rested and having a functional nose and sinuses, restful sleep, and minimal inflammation.  Every new patient provides me with an interesting opportunity to unravel their symptoms, ensure diagnoses are accurate, and enact proven and effective treatment strategies.  Advancements in technology and medical therapies enhance my ability to help patients.  Change is possible, and as an expert in sinus, allergy, and sleep disorders I can help patients achieve a better life."
