What Is Allergy Immunotherapy?

After an allergy test is complete and we find out what you are allergic to, we can begin allergy immunotherapy.

Allergy immunotherapy is a long-term treatment that helps decrease the body’s allergic response to seasonal allergens. By serving up regular, tiny doses of the things you are allergic to in shot, drop, or pill form, you can build up your body’s immunity to these things. Essentially, you’re training your body to be less sensitive to the things it finds offensive, such as grass and tree pollen.

Seasonal allergies (also known as allergic rhinitis) usually require ongoing treatments, including medications, nasal rinses, and nasal sprays. Allergy shots and sublingual drops improve your tolerance to airborne allergens over time.

While allergy medications get less effective over time, shots and drops tend to get more effective over time. Immunotherapy helps to desensitize and provide symptomatic relief for patients with allergic rhinitis and asthma.

How Immunotherapy Works

Immunotherapy works by gradually introducing small, increasing doses of specific allergens to your body. Over time, this consistent exposure trains your immune system to develop tolerance, decreasing its sensitivity to these triggers. This process effectively re-educates your body, leading to fewer symptoms, reduced need for medications, and a significantly improved quality of life.
Types of Allergy Immunotherapy

Allergy Shots

Allergy shots, also known as subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), involve regular injections of allergen extracts. These are administered in our office after an allergy test confirms your specific triggers. Initially, shots are given more frequently (e.g., once to three times per week), with the frequency gradually decreasing as your body builds resistance.

Many patients experience significant relief within 6 to 12 months, with treatment typically continuing fr several years to ensure lasting benefits.

Allergy Drops

After your allergy test, we create allergy drops specific to your triggered allergens. You take these drops home and administer them according to the schedule prescribed. Typically, you will take them daily under the tongue. This will help your body get used to the allergen and decrease allergy symptoms over time.

We administer these doses regularly over 18 months and reformulate the drops every 3 months to build resistance to the allergy. Sublingual drops have very low risks of reactions or anaphylaxis.

Conditions Treated with Immunotherapy

Allergy immunotherapy is highly effective for a wide range of allergic conditions, particularly those caused by environmental allergens. This includes chronic seasonal allergies triggered by pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds, as well as perennial allergies caused by indoor allergens like dust mites, molds, and pet dander. By targeting the root cause, immunotherapy can alleviate symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, and even allergy-induced asthma.

Treatment Process

Preparation for Your Appointment
Before starting allergy immunotherapy, a comprehensive allergy test is required to identify your specific allergens. At Texas Sinus & Snoring, we perform detailed skin prick and intradermal tests to accurately pinpoint your triggers. This precise diagnosis allows us to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique allergic profile.
For allergy shots, you will receive injections in our office, followed by a brief observation period to monitor for any reactions. For allergy drops (sublingual immunotherapy), you will administer a small dose of liquid allergen extract under your tongue at home, following a schedule provided by our team. Allergy drops are typically reformulated every three months to ensure optimal effectiveness as your resistance builds.

Safety and Potential Side Effects

Allergy Immunotherapy is generally safe and well-tolerated. For allergy drops, the risk of severe reactions is very low. With allergy shots, the most common side effects are mild, temporary reactions at the injection site, such as redness or swelling. More significant reactions are rare, and our medical team closely monitors you during in-office treatments to ensure your safety.
Long-Term Benefits and Results
The primary benefit of allergy immunotherapy is the potential for long-term relief from allergy symptoms, often lasting for years after treatment is completed. Many patients experience a significant reduction in symptom severity, a decreased need for allergy medications, and an overall improvement in their quality of life. Immunotherapy can effectively treat your allergies by retraining your immune system.

Candidates for Allergy Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is an excellent option for individuals who experience persistent and bothersome allergy symptoms that are not adequately controlled by medications or allergen avoidance. It is also ideal for those who prefer a long-term solution rather than ongoing symptom management. If you are seeking to reduce your reliance on daily allergy medications and achieve lasting relief from your allergies, you may be an ideal candidate.
